What the houses are like
Modest concrete-block houses on slabs that sit low, many of them rebuilt after 1992, with carports and utility rooms attached at the back. When the yard floods, the slab edge is the highest dry ground for a hundred feet and everything in the soil heads for it. That is why ants show up in a kitchen that had none the week before, and why the fix is drainage and a perimeter, not a can of spray.
How the year runs here
The wet season is the whole story: June to October, every storm pushes ants and roaches up out of the ground and into the house for a few days. Mosquitoes breed in whatever the storm left standing, which in a flat yard is most of it. The dry months are genuinely quiet here, and that is when the sensible work gets done.
